New Low-Data Plans Make Mobile Browsing Affordable!
August 15th, 2010 by Peter 5 comments »Residents of Canada rejoice!
The cell phone carriers Telus and Koodo Mobile have introduced plans that enable customers to use a real smartphone for as low as $25 (Koodo) and $40 (Telus) + tax per month! Unheard of!
How do they do it:
Instead of the standard 500MB of data included in a smartphone package, these carriers allot 100MB for basic web browsing, email, social networking and instant messaging.
Koodo Mobile: Even though Koodo’s smartphone selection is currently limited to the Inq Chat 3G (A fantastic smartphone, btw) they do offer the cheapest of the cheap smartphone add-on:
$10 for 100MB of data.
This can be added on to any voice plan, even the $15 50 anytime minute + 50 text message plan. Most of my customers are adding the $10 to the $25 talk and text plan, which gives you 100 minutes, unlimited text & picture messaging, and unlimited local talking on weekends and evenings after 7pm. Note that this 100MB add on can’t be used on a Blackberry device

Conversely, Telus is offering a $40 student plan that includes the 100MB’s of data. If you have valid student ID, shelling out the $40/mth has big value – especially if you opt for a 3 year agreement. On a 3yr plan, you get 200 minutes, 100MB’s of data, unlimited text, nationwide talk and text to 10 numbers, 6pm evenings and weekends, and to top it all off – free voice mail!

The Telus Student 40 plan is available on all of their consumer phones, and these smartphones: Inq Chat 3G, Nokia E72, Nokia E71, HTC Snap, LG New Chocolate, Samsung Advance and the HTC Hero.
Future Shop, as always, carries both and guarantees the lowest price. Yes I work for Future Shop – if you happen to be from Orillia, Ontario, come see me in-store!
WordPress for Blackberry – Make New Page Feature
August 15th, 2010 by Peter No comments »WordPress for Blackberry takes another step forward for mobile bloggers! The addition of the functionality to add a static page right from your mobile device opens up a delicious amount of possibilities for content providers.
While facebook and twitter are great for certain aspects of instant-sharing, people give a lot of control to the formatting of their media. If I want my visitors to see my late breaking content on my website, with my ads & related content, then I’ll use wordpress for blackberry every time.
With the create/edit a page feature I benefit from:
A Static page vs. Ever changing url’s
My theme/ads/related content vs. Theirs
Increased number of bookmarking customers
Increased trust from search engines and more backlinks to a single page (which = more traffic)
And more I’m sure.
So, if you haven’t yet, you’ve got one more reason to blog on-the-go with your cell phone. It truly makes sharing fresh content faster and easier.

What is HTML 5?
July 29th, 2010 by Peter 1 comment »
A quick 5 point list on the new and exciting HTML 5.
1: A revamped web programming language
It will become the standard for all websites.
2: Still under development
It may take until 2022 until it’s fully implemented! Parts of it are tested and stable, and are in use today.

What is HTML 5?
3: Integrated video support
No more will you have 6 million browser plug-ins to install before you watch videos online. Many browsers have already been updated to handle certain formats in HTML 5!
What is HTML 5?
4: Drag and Drop Support
Imagine being able to just drag your pics and vids to your Facebook page! Nice little time-saver.
5: Geolocation Support
Imagine all the google ads you see are for shops within a 10 minute walk from where you sit! If you so consent, you can provide your location information via your IP address and WiFi access point data.
Now you know what to say when someone asks: What is HTML 5?
Of course, there’s lots more to HTML 5 than the above. To stay in the loop, bookmark this site or subscribe to the RSS feed!
