It Doesn’t Take a Lot of Time
I think the biggest misconception non-webmasters have about making a website is that it has to take a lot of time, what with all that programming and learning and scary techie things that must have to happen to make a website go. However, such is not really the case.
For the curious, take a look at my Website Completion Checklist – a key tool users of pyneonline.com reference to keep them on track and to set realistic goals for website completion:
As you can see, once everything is broken down into simpler steps, it doesn’t look as scary and time consuming. Your first site could take as little as 20 working hours, from start to finish, which is the same as:
- 40 Episodes of The Simpsons, including commercials
- 2.5 Entirely sleepless nights
- 1 One-way flight from LA to India
- 600 2 minute minor slashing penalties in the NHL
- And so on
Most of the time is spent writing your website’s content, and tweaking your design. Once you get the basics down, keeping things going is easy, but you really do need a lot of content for your website to mean anything to anyone besides you and your buddies. Articles are great for getting the attention of search engines, pictures and videos (if they’re original) can get you a following too – but obviously, your site can’t have nothing, and it’s making that something that takes the most time.
Remember, you DO have something to make a website about, and I’m sure you can afford to spend 20 hours on sharing it with the world, especially if it could pay off financially… Stay tuned for episode 3 of You Want a Website, You Just Don’t Know It Yet.

Thank you sooo much Mr. Pyneonline! I’m flying from LA to India all the time. It’s so great to know that during that time, I can complete an entire website. I usually use my flying time to reflect upon flowers, particularly daisies. Well, I guess I don’t need to expand my comment as to why daisies, since of course everybody with a brain knows they’re the only kind of “true” flower that ever existed.
…Thanks for your um, comment. Go daisies!… Right?
