Website Ideas

One of the hardest things for me is coming up with new website ideas. I know that I have the knowledge and resources to make a website, but I'm running out of things to make websites on. If you're new to the world of websites, I'm someone that makes what I like to refer to as filter websites. I take something that's not very well documented on the internet, or something that has outdated or conflicting information, filter that information (and add my own from books and original research from scholarly articles, studies, or current affairs), and compose a nice looking, easy to navigate site that gets people the information they're looking for. I become a subject matter expert through research, and I put my own style to the information I've acquired in a series of articles. I let the search engines know the site is out there, place some advertisements on the site, and generate an income.

 Website Ideas - My Strategy

Coming up with website ideas for me stems from either A) Coming across a key word or key phrase in a keyword selection tool Or B) Making a website on something that interests me personally. I'l still use the keyword selection tool to figure out how people search for the content that I wish to provide, but those are two solid ways to lead to website ideas.

Website Ideas - Making it Unique

What will my website have to offer that no other website on the internet does? That's a question you should ask yourself before really going forward with your website idea. How do you do this? Again the keyword selection tool is very helpful, and do some research. Review the websites that are already out there and see if they're missing anything. For this website, I noticed that most websites about making websites are not aimed at beginners! Weird, but I saw a market to capitalize on, so, throughout the site I use plain language and assume my readers have a knowledge level similar to my own when I first started out. Website ideas don't have to be amazing to create a successful website, they just have to be unique.

Website Ideas - Niche Content

The more refined your content is to your audience the better. Don't make a website about dogs, or even training dogs - make it about training labrador retriever puppies (if someone already hasn't). A successful website idea has to be specific - it has to be it's own niche. For this site, which is much larger than most of my successful sites, I actually divided it up into 4 parts. Pyneonline.com introduces beginners to websites in general and making money from them, seo.pyneonline.com is all about getting beginners into the high search engine rankings, hosting.pyneonline.com is about showing beginners how to pick the hosting that's right for them, and articles.pyneonline.com shows beginners how to write internet-optimized articles. Website ideas have to be specific and focused so they don't get lost in the maze of thousands of websites that are out there.

Website Ideas - Special Content / Features

Maybe you are someone that really shines on camera, that is, making a video about your subject. That's quality content that people will enjoy. Maybe you have access to certain news or information before anyone else. That's something people will enjoy. If you have an edge, use it to generate website ideas. Pictures, new original content, video - anything you can think of that will separate your website from the rest is great to base your website idea around.

Website Ideas - Putting it All Together

The test I use to see if my website idea is solid enough is twofold. First, I try to brainstorm 10 key phrases that people will type into google when they are looking for the information that I can provide. These shouldn't just be synonyms, for example:

Teaching Lab Pups, lab puppy training, puppy training for labs, etc. - That's all the same, they should be unique, like this:

Training lab puppies, housebreaking lab puppies, how to walk lab puppies, teach lab puppies to swim, etc. etc.

If I can't think of 10, it's a bad website idea because I'll just be repeating the same information over and over again, and that's no good.

And there is such a thing as being TOO specific. Again I get out my handy keyword selection tool, and look to see the average search volume of the key phrase I'm looking for. I like to aim between 300 and 10000 - give or take. The term 'housebreaking lab puppies' only has about 60 google hits per month. Far too low, but 'training lab puppies' comes in around the 600 mark - Perfect, that's a keeper. 1 down, 10 to go.

I do hope this helps you out in creating and narrowing down your website ideas.
